What is palm oil fractionation technology?

Palm oil fractionation technology refers to the separation of palm oil into low melting point liquid phase (olein) and high melting point solid phase (stearin) by controlling the cooling crystallization process of palm oil.

Through palm oil fractionation process, palm oil can be separated into three components: palm stearin, palm olein and palm midfraction. The palm stearin melting point is generally 50℃, and the palm olein is generally about 24℃. The palm stearin is suitable for making margarine and shortening without causing slow crystallization, greasy feeling and post-hardening, and greatly improving the plastic range of fats. The palm olein is an excellent frying oil.

 1. Sterilizing. This process can be done by either roasting/smoking which is done after threshing process or by steaming/boiling which should be done before threshing process.

2. Threshing. In which each piece of fruit is separated from the rest of the bunch. Large palm oil mill plant place the fruit in rotary drums to complete this process, while small palm oil production facilities perform threshing by hand.

3. After threshing, the next step in palm oil production line involves pressing the fruit to separate the oil from the skin and pulp. Pressing machines may use hydraulic or pneumatic power to process large batches at once. The oil is then diluted with water and filtered through a screen to help remove debris and impurities.

4. At this stage, the palm oil can be sold as a low-quality palm oil or sent on for further processing. For further processing of palm oil, the palm oil refinery plant and palm oil fractionation plant are necessary. The palm oil refining process can get rid of the harmful impurities and needless substance in the crude edible oil, getting standard edible oil by utilizing the physical methods and chemical processes.

5. During fractionation, palm oil is heated to separates out the various triglycerides contained within. This helps to separate low-quality oil from higher quality oils, which are rich in essential fatty acids but contain less saturated fat than unpurified palm oil.

Main functions of different palm oil processing machine:
Sterilizer - cook soft fruit bunches for easy separation
Thresher - great vibrations through palm fruit from separated fruit bunches
Digester  -  increase the oil yield by warming the fruit pulp
Palm oil presser - separate the pulp nut and the crush the palm pulp
Oil filter or Clarificator - remove fiber material from the crude palm oil
Crude oil storage tank - keep the palm oil within required temperature for further transportation and storage
