Mechanical Pressing
Mechanical pressing uses a screw oil press to extract oil from prepared sunflower seeds without chemical solvents.
Its main advantages are:
- Simpler process flow
- Lower initial investment
- Easier operation and maintenance
- No solvent recovery section
For smaller sunflower oil projects, mechanical pressing can therefore be a practical choice.
Solvent Extraction
Solvent extraction is used to recover additional oil from the press cake after mechanical pressing.
The major advantage is higher overall oil recovery. Under appropriate operating conditions, the residual oil content of the extracted meal can be reduced to below 1%.
However, solvent extraction also requires additional processing equipment, utilities, safety systems and operating controls.
Therefore, the better question is not simply which extraction method is better. The choice should be based on the project's capacity, oil recovery target, investment level and operating conditions.
3. Build the Equipment List Around the Process
A sunflower oil processing plant normally consists of several connected processing sections.
A typical flow is:
Sunflower Seeds → Cleaning → Dehulling & Flaking → Conditioning → Oil Extraction → Crude Oil Filtration & Storage → Refining → Dewaxing → Filling & Packaging
Depending on the selected process, equipment may include:
- Vibrating screen

4. Refining Is a Separate Stage From Oil Extraction
Mechanical pressing or solvent extraction produces crude sunflower oil.
Crude oil still contains substances such as phospholipids, free fatty acids, pigments, waxes and odor compounds.
A typical refining sequence is:
Degumming → Deacidification → Bleaching → Deodorization
Each stage addresses a different quality issue, helping improve the color, stability, odor and overall quality of the oil.
The required refining configuration also depends on production capacity, finished-oil requirements and the desired level of automation.
5. Why Dewaxing Matters for Sunflower Oil
Sunflower oil contains natural waxes that can crystallize at lower temperatures.
If these waxes remain in the finished oil, the oil may become cloudy during cool storage.
Dewaxing uses controlled cooling, crystallization and filtration to separate these waxes and improve the clarity of sunflower oil.
For projects producing clear packaged edible sunflower oil, dewaxing should therefore be considered when defining the overall refining configuration.

The same equipment configuration is not necessarily suitable for every sunflower oil project.
