How palm oil processing differs from the pressing of general oilseeds

Palm fruit and general oilseed like peanut, sunflower, soybean, cottonseed are different oil seeds, and need different pressing processes and machines. In the pressing process of palm oil and common oil, it generally requires several steps of pretreatment, pressing, clarification and drying. Below we will compare in detail the difference between palm oil making and general oilseed press.

1. Raw material differences

Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis). The raw material is the fresh fruit bunch (FFB), which contains a mix of both mesocarp (the fleshy part of the fruit) and kernel (the hard inner seed). The mesocarp, which makes up the majority of the fruit, is rich in oil and is the primary source for palm oil extraction. The kernel, though also containing oil, is usually processed separately to extract palm kernel oil (PKO).

In contrast, general oilseeds like soybeans, sunflower, and canola are primarily seeds or grains that are processed to extract their oil. These seeds are typically smaller, with a higher proportion of oil in the seed compared to the fruit of the oil palm. For example, soybeans consist of around 18-20% oil content, while sunflower seeds can have around 40% oil content, depending on the variety.
 

2. Extraction process differences

The extraction of palm oil involves a multi-step process, starting with the harvesting of the fresh fruit bunches. After harvesting, the fruit undergoes sterilization (usually with steam) to loosen the fruit from the bunch and to deactivate enzymes that could degrade the oil quality. The next steps include:

Threshing: Separation of individual fruits from the bunches.

Sterilization: Heat treatment to soften the fruit and facilitate oil extraction.

Pressing/Extracting: The softened fruits are mechanically pressed or subjected to a chemical solvent extraction process to extract the oil. After pressing, crude palm oil (CPO) is obtained, and it undergoes further purification.

Additionally, the palm kernel is separated and undergoes its own pressing process to extract palm kernel oil (PKO), which is a distinct product with different properties and uses.

For general oilseeds, the extraction process typically involves cleaning, conditioning, and then pressing the seeds using either mechanical or hydraulic presses. In many cases, the oil content of oilseeds is high enough to be efficiently extracted using a mechanical press. The process usually involves

Cleaning: Removing impurities like dirt, stones, and other foreign particles from the seeds.

Conditioning: Heating and conditioning the seeds to optimize the oil extraction.

Pressing: Extracting the oil through a screw press or hydraulic press.

If necessary, solvent extraction methods (like hexane) can also be used to extract additional oil from the pressed cake. This method is commonly employed for seeds with lower oil content, such as soybeans.

Firstly, we should receive the palm fruit bunches timely. As we all know, fresh oil palm had better to being processed in the 48 hours after harvesting. So, it is necessary to install a raw material receive station to ensure the unity of material freshness. And it is also helpful to calculate palm oil yield by weighing the materials on this station.

Secondly, we can use the sterilizer to sterilize the oil palm fruit. In this step, sterilizer aims to make palm fruit bunches softer, which is convenient for subsequent processing. At the same time, sterilization can destroying enzymes in the flesh to prevent the free fatty acid content in the oil from rising.

Thirdly, we can use the drum type thresher to separate the palm fruits and the empty palm fruit bunches. Then we can transform the palm fruits to the following pressing station.

How to process palm fruit into red palm oil?

 It takes mainly 5 steps to press palm fruit to obtain crude palm oil, including sterilization, threshing, digesting, pressing and filtration.

First of all, put the fresh palm fruit bunches in the fruit cage, and put the fruit cage in the sterilization tank with a row crane for sterilization. The function of palm fruit sterilization: on the one hand, it increases the humidity of the fruit, which is beneficial to the separation of the fruit from the fruit bunch. On the other hand, it destroys the activity of the fat-decomposing enzyme and slows down rancidity, so as to prevent the content of free fatty acids (FFA) from increasing, causing the oil molecules to condense on the surface and destroy the interior, the structure is easy to press, and is conducive to the subsequent separation of pulp and core. 

Secondly, The sterilized palm fruit bunches are de-fruited in a Drum Type Thresher. Realize fruit drop through physical collision. The obtained palm fruit is transported by auger and bucket elevator into the digesting tank for digester. Digesting the fruit is to better squeeze out the oil. Part of the oil produced during the digesting process will be transported to the temporary storage tank. Then press the digested palm fruit in the palm oil presser. After processing, you will get crude palm oil and mixture of fiber and nut. 


        The last step is to filter the crude palm oil. The vibrating screen filters large fibers, the clarification tank filters heavy impurities and silt, and the plate filter filters fine fibers and absorbs water. The vacuum drying system separates oil and water, and draining water is conducive to crude oil storage. Store the obtained crude oil in an oil storage tank. We get the crude palm oil.

The vibrating screen is double-layered. The clarification tank has a built-in heating coil. Because the crude palm oil has a low melting point, the heating coil can increase the fluidity of the oil. For clean oil, the vacuum drying system is carried out under vacuum and high temperature.
