There are two methods to making crude soybean oil, oil press line and oil extraction line.
After refining, edible refined soybean oil can be produced. But do you
know the difference between pressed soybean oil and solvent extracted
oil?
1. Different processing technology
The processing technology of pressed oil is "physical pressing", while the processing technology of the solvent extracted oil is "chemical extracting”.
In expeller pressing line, there is no solvent (chemical) residues in oil so that pressed oil is more pure , higher in natural colors and flavors. Physical pressing has higher requirements on raw materials. After impurity, stone removing, crushing and cooking, oil plants are sent into the screw oil press for oil extraction.
In extraction line, oil can be taken out of the oil seed by a washed
or purged with a solvent (also known as a petroleum distillate) such as
hexane, to release the fat in the seed. The most important thing is to
remove that solvent from the oil through heat in a sealed chamber.
Solvent expelling gets 97-99% of the oil out of the seed. It is the most efficient way to get all the oil from the canola seeds. That is one of the reasons that it is the cheapest canola option on the market.
2. Different nutrients
The pressed soybean oil is good in color, aroma and taste and retains various nutrients. While the solvent extracted oil is colorless and tasteless. Most of the nutrients are destroyed after processing.
3. Different requirements on materials
"Pressed soybean oil" is made by pure physical pressing method, retaining the original flavor of soybeans. Thus, there are strict requirements with soybeans, which should be fresh and with low acid value and peroxide value, so the price is relatively higher. Meanwhile, since the residual oil content in soybean cake is higher, the oil yield of pressing is comparatively low. As a result, the pressed soybean oil price is higher.
